Statement of Intent, 1st draft

As part of our of the specification, students must complete a statement of intent to explain (using media language) what they hope to achieve in their video. this is my first draft:   For my music-video I plan to use media language to create a pop music video that presents a fun upbeat video yet reflects beauty standards that are placed on women. Ill use this to target the 16-25 demographic as stated in my brief as well as my “perfect audience member” that can range anything from the C2 to AB class. I will create a video that has a representation that is something relatable to both my audience member and anyone who views it. I will use this moral story and the performers in the video to promote the video and spread a positive message, encouraging others to listen and view the video. to achieve this I will use mise-en scene to reflect the archaic and outdated practice of holding people to unrealistic beauty standards. With performers dressed in costumes with high contrastin...

Matthew Moore Logo

Image
For my artists brand name and logo I've gone with the name "Matthew Moore" I was inspired by djs such as Calvin Harris David Guetta and Martin Garrix who simply use their regular names. Furthermore the alliteration in matthew Moore rolls off the tongue and is an easy name to remember. I also took inspiration from simplistic logos like Calvin Harris' that uses simple lines and text I added a hint of colour to my text, I used a black to orange gradient to add a pop of colour that reflects the upbeat joyous vibe of the song and video

Mood board

Image
My moodboard includes images of coloured lighting, set design and camera techniques I'm looking to use in my video. I'd like one of the video to consist of a performative element in a set with contrasting colours and backdrops with props etc. id also like a running narrative with a performative element where there's a band like in the back to the future reference on my board. a roller disco might also be something I use just as it echoes a sense of fun. the screenshots from the example: kickstarts video show possible editing techniques I could use to incorporate my theme of individuality and togetherness.

Music video checklist

Checklist : 2 characters representing two social groups 2 different locations (this can be the same place but a change of mise-en-scene)  a range of camera angles shot distances and movements  graphics and titles that display the artist name and track title a relatively high cutting rate that fits the fast pace of the pop/dance track I've chosen  a mixture of performative and narrative elements to both portray a story and convey the artists beliefs etc an intertextual reference to a relevant piece of media that falls within pop culture  a representation of social groups that are relatable to my chosen ideal audience member  a use of mise en scene that conforms to the light heartedness of the song (e.g bright colours, sun, coloured lights and costume and makeup)

The perfect audience member

Image
My ideal audience member in my research on UK tribes i decided to keep within the "mainstream" section. as our target audience in the brief states that the music has to be pop, a digestable sound that all can enjoy, it seems that people from within the mainstream guidelines fit perfectly. the song we need to choose has to be something thats playable on the radio one breakfast show and would feature in the charts, a defining feature of the "townie's" music taste. the song "the girls" offers a fun and energetic vibe, making it a universal song that anyone, whether mainstream or not, could relate to and enjoy. therefore, the tone of the video should also fit this description. therefore the representations required will not necessarily be abrasive or controversial/taboo topics but social divides that are universally accepted as morally wrong. the townie and rah audience model suggest that they arent interested in politics and are more local and care mor...

copyright permission

Image
In order to access and use my chosen song I am required to ask for the rights to the song, in order to do this I sent an email to Sony records uk, the parent label to Columbia records where my chosen artist, Calvin Harris, is signed. Here's a transcript of the email I sent to Sony music:  Dear sir/madam I am writing in regards to the copyright of the song “The Girls” by Calvin Harris. I will potentially be using this song in my coursework for my A Level media studies pending your permission.  For our coursework task in our ocr a level media studies we are required to film direct edit and produce a popular music video for the 16-25 demographic. I chose “The Girls” because of its cultural significance, dance beat, conventional lyric style and infectious pop sound, all characteristics of a fantastic pop song and music video.  In order to use “The Girls” I will need permission from Columbia Records because of the copyright. The music video will only be a...

Song choice

Image
THE GIRLS - CALVIN HARRIS Why I chose this track: This is a track artist Calvin Harris is famous for its high energy and is popular among the 16-25 demographic. it was a song made in 2007 yet still is recognised as a defining track of Calvin Harris' career. while it has a dance beat it has a set of lyrics that are relatable and digestible for a large audience. I have also enjoyed the track since its release and think the high energy music will bring a fun and high energy video. Why I chose Calvin Harris: as an artist Calvin Harris is a seasoned pop professional, with tracks that almost always rise to the top of international charts he epitomises the new dance pop trend that's taking over mainstream music. he consistently has dominated the music industry for over 10 years and makes feel good pop records that anyone can enjoy.

Music video directors research

Image
Auteur music video directors auteur definition:  An auteur is an artist, usually a film director, who applies a highly centralized and subjective control to many aspects of a collaborative creative work; in other words, a person equivalent to an author of a novel or a play. directors like these are innovators and care more about cultural capital rather than monetary value and do it for art etc Michel Gondry has worked most notably with artists such as the chemical brothers, the white stripes, Bjork, queens of the stone age Radiohead and more he uses a blend between obscure and whimsical props as well as interesting camera angles to blend reality and fiction together. his videos are live action and use editing heavily to help splice things together to create interesting conceptual videos (see the hardest button to button video by the white stripes) Radiohead's knives out tells a narrative yet has an odd twist with the props that tell a conceptualised love story he als...

Branding and logo

Image
Music Video research  production company - branding and logo  our brief tells us we need to choose an artist that could be seen performing under a label such as Sony therefore for for my logo and branding I wanted to take inspiration from its minimalistic branding it uses a simple illustration and text to establish the brand and its a familiar logo to most groups such as the Warner music group use a logo with text sometimes appearing to clarify the brand name but the symbol itself uses letters of the name of the company therefore even without the text underneath its a recognisable symbol of the brand for my brand name I chose the name "euphony records" the word euphony being a synonym for melody, incorporating music and yet being a unique brand name that'll be recognisable for my initial design i took inspiration from the fluidity of the Sony logo, the colours are bright and stand out however I think the font is a bit too traditional my second one ...
